In Arizona, any adult may adopt a child, as long as they become certified by the court. This means that any resident age 18 or older, whether married, single, or legally separated, is eligible to petition the court. To ensure a safe and caring home for a child, anyone wishing to adopt must submit a written application, attend an adoption orientation and training, and pass an investigation and review by the court.

- Financial stability and outlook
- Morals and values
- Physical and mental health and wellness
- History of court actions related to child abuse
- Fingerprint-based criminal background check for all adults in the home
- Other relevant information
If you are attempting to adopt a child who is your niece or nephew, sibling, or grandchild, you won’t need to go through the entire certification process, but the court will require you to pass the fingerprint-based criminal background check.
